Howard Shoemaker - Inducted 2015

Howard Shoemaker graduated in 1936 from Souderton Area High School, where he was an accomplished three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. Upon graduating from Souderton Area High School, Howard took his talents to Gettysburg College, where he was an integral part of their football, basketball and baseball teams. Howard’s collegiate career was cut short, as he became the first student in the history of the college to be drafted to serve in World War II. However, this did not stop Howard from accomplishing in two years what most athletes would hope to accomplish in four years. As a sophomore fullback, Howard was one the leading rushers in the league, scoring winning touchdowns in his first two games against Bucknell University and Albright College. Howard also had an amazing performance against Drexel University, when he scored four touchdowns. On the hardwood, Howard was a leader on the basketball team, starring as the starting power forward. Howard also excelled in baseball, hitting his way to a .350 batting average and three home runs.

The Associated Press awarded Howard an honorable mention Little All-American in football after his sophomore season, during which he averaged more than seven yards per carry.

Howard was awarded the prestigious Bronze Star for his efforts and service in the war. After his discharge in 1945, Howard returned to Gettysburg College to complete his degree. He also served in The Battle of the Bulge, where he received a Distinguished Service Award. He played professional football in York before returning to his Alma Mater in 1957 to serve in many capacities, including head football coach and interim athletic director.

In 1986 he was inducted into Gettysburg College’s Hall of Athletic Honor.

Howard passed away on September 7, 2007 at the age of 89.
