Barry Wenhold graduated from Souderton Area High School in 1966, where he was active in athletics lettering in football, basketball and track. Barry was recognized mostly for his accomplishments on the football field as a halfback, as he led the Bux-Mont League in points scored in 1964 and 1965. In 1965, Barry ran his way to 17 touchdowns and led the league in rushing with 1284 yards. In one game, he ran for 303 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. Another highlight of Barry was when he once scored 6 rushing touchdowns in one game. Barry’s career totals include: 2809 rushing yards, 9.3 yards per carry and scored a total of 39 touchdowns. In 1965, these statistics earned him a spot on 1st Team All-Bux Mont, 2nd team AP All State at running back, Montgomery County High School Athlete of the Year, and was named the Notre Dame Award for outstanding athletic ability in the Philadelphia area. He received an Honorable Mention Award for the PennsylvaniaBig 33 Squad and was selected as 1 of 7 finalists for Knute Rockne Memorial Award.

While Barry excelled in football, he also participated in track and field at Souderton Area High School. He ran a 9.9 in the 110 yard dash, setting a new school record in the 100 yard dash in 1965. Along with track, Barry also was a key member of the boys’ basketball team.

After his senior year, his football jersey, #62, was retired by head football coach Drew Darrah. Barry’s number was the only one to ever to be retired at Souderton Area High School. Upon graduation, he received a full scholarship to Florida State University where he played football for four years. After graduating college in 1971, he became a head high school football coach in Florida for many years. After retiring from coaching, Barry owned a successful construction business.

More recently, Barry was inducted into the North Penn-Souderton Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. At Coach Darrah’s retirement tribute in 1998, Barry was asked to represent all the players who Drew Darrah coached in his 38 years, presenting him with a set of golf clubs.
