Carl Wismer - Inducted 2013

A 1955 graduate of Souderton Area High School, Carl Wismer was the first athlete to win letters in four sports; football, basketball, baseball and track. During his junior and senior years in high school, he was all Bux-Mont League and co-captain in football, basketball and baseball. In his senior year, he was named the basketball team's Most Valuable Player and played on the Bux-Mont League championship team of 1955.

Carl joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation and played baseball and football at Parris Island, SC. Upon discharge, he had two tryouts with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher, but he never played pro ball.

When returning to this area he played for years in the Perkiomen Valley Twilight League, competing for teams in Souderton, Harleysville and Lansdale. He also played for Perkasie, Quakertown and Upper Perkiomen in the Tri-County Baseball League. Playing fast pitch softball, Wismer was on a Clemens Class “C” championship team, the Kulp’s Nationwide “A” championship team and the Zwingli state championship teams of 1967-68-70.

Mr. Wismer was well known as an umpire for Little League to collegiate level sports and fast-pitch softball during the 1970s. He was an umpire for the Perkiomen Twilight League for 30 years, serving as umpire-in-chief for both the Twilight League and the Penn Valley Softball League. He coached Little League Baseball, Connie Mack Baseball and the Harleysville Connie Mack Team to a state championship in 1982. He coached youth soccer, a sport which he did not play, and led a Harleysville team to the Upper Bucks League championships in 1980 and 1981. He served as an assistant baseball coach at Souderton Area High School for three years and was an assistant football coach under Drew Darrah for 17 years. During that time, the Indians won two Suburban One Liberty Division championships (1988, 1992).

Carl Wismer was inducted into the North Penn-Souderton Sports Hall of Fame in May of 1993, where he served on the board of directors since the hall's inception in 1991 and was president for two years.

Carl passed away on May 7, 2001. His wife Linda still resides in Souderton. They have three children: daughter, Sandra L. of Levittown; sons, Michael S. of Orlando, Fla., James C. of Weaverville, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
